Passage: 1 John 4:17-21
I remember in the 90’s there were a couple of t-shirt slogans that really took off. A couple that come immediately to mind are “Got Milk” and “No Fear”. Both would take on adaptations to more personalize your pursuits in life. In the northwest where mountain biking was taking off one shirt I saw often would say on the front in small letters, “NO FEAR” just like all the others but on the back it said “Fear No Hill” others that were avid kayakers or those dedicated to river rafting would ware one saying “Fear No Rapid”. In these situations it would be socially acceptable for your average individual to become fearful. I mean, imagine it, sitting on a hiking trail literally thousands of feet above the valley floor, with boulders and large trees lining the trail. And I am going to take a modified Schwinn bicycle (ok so it may be a little more advanced) but I am about to take on this challenge… and Fear No Hill?? I for one, am not sure I could do that. But those that had experienced success, those that had at one point faced this fear and came through the other side unharmed and more skilled and experienced, they can then take on the next challenge that much more confidant in a both a safe outcome and one that will leave them yet again even more advanced and confident for all their future endeavors.
First John 4:18 is one of my go to verses! In times that I find myself fearful I will call on this passage and find myself reassured that I have nothing to fear! That I am a forgiven and accepted child of God that has been delivered from death to life. I have recently found myself in conversations with a dear friend that is new in her faith, and she is devouring the word of God at record pace. She is finding things in the Bible regarding what would seem to be the not-so-distant future that if framed with the wrong perspective can be extremely terrifying!! The Wrath of God is not something that is to be taken lightly. And those that will experience it, should be very afraid! And upon entering into this world WE ALL fall into the category of “Children of Wrath.” Ephesians 2:3, meaning that every person must find that golden ticket to go from this identity to a new one and that ticket was purchased in advance for all of us by Jesus at the cross of calvary. All we need to do is go to him and accept it.
Now as a child of God, the Wrath of God is not part of my future. Not my near future or my eternal future! I HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR!! “TO LIVE IS CHRIST AND TO DIE IS GAIN!!” (Philippians 1:21). I serve a sovereign God; “Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear.” Isaiah 59:1
And we can be confident, having NO FEAR, that because HE came up out of the Grave that we too, as children of God, will never see death. That we will only pass from one corruptible life to one that is forever incorruptible… Fear NO Grave!
Know Jesus no fear
Know Jesus and make Him known.
